Pertex ®
NEW Pertex Quantum® – high-performance fabric engineered for use in extreme environments
NEW Pertex Quantum is the lightest fabric that Pertex has ever made. It is a true featherweight at around 25g/m2. It uses the finest yarns available with the maximum thread count.
Using a balanced high-density weave with a unique interlocked rip-stop construction, the fabric is woven on specially adapted weaving machines. Thanks to its dense weave, Pertex is downproof, virtually windproof and can be used for any high-end application in sleeping bags, down jackets and expedition gear. It is a gear freak’s dream.
Pertex® History
In the 1970′s, an eccentric mountaineer called Hamish Hamilton came to Perseverance Mills with a theory. Whilst developing the now legendary Vango Force 10 tents, Hamish theorized that cotton, canvas canopy fabrics gained much of their water resistance by wicking moisture along the softly spun yarns – a characteristic known as capillary action. Hamish went on to apply this theory to synthetic fabrics.
The first Pertex fabrics were created using very tightly woven ultra fine polyamide yarns. Hamish set about proving his theory by developing and marketing products that demonstrated capillary action.
The first was the Travelers Towel and the revolutionary Pertex Pile clothing that provided excellent weather protection, breathability and comfort, especially when active in cold and damp climates. These garments did not feature membranes or coatings; the original soft shells were born.
As the original fabrics were developed Pertex found that many of its features (light weight, softness, fast drying) were of benefit to down and synthetic insulated equipment and apparel. Their fabrics offered a significant weight saving over existing fabrics at that time, so the move into the sleeping bag and apparel market began.
The Pertex range of fabrics was then refined and developed as the years went by to ensure that the brand was synonymous with quality and innovation. This has continued to the present day, with the launches of the likes of Pertex Microlight, Pertex Equilibrium and Pertex Quantum.
